[...] Bobby McFerrin’s father, the opera baritone Robert McFerrin Sr., made an album of spirituals in the 1950s. Now the younger McFerrin has made his own very different “Spirityouall” (Masterworks), an album that’s simultaneously playful, down-home, innovative and devotional. Gil Goldstein’s arrangements rely on guitars — acoustic, electric, resonator, pedal steel — in ways that often evoke rural blues and gospel; Larry Campbell, the ubiquitous Americana sideman, has plenty to do. The tunes can also swing, hint at Latin rhythms and transform themselves as they go; “Swing Low” becomes a jazz ballad that moves smoothly and subtly through multiple meters. Mr. McFerrin is, as usual, puckish and ingenious: scat-singing, overdubbing harmonies, honoring a simple melody or bouncing all over the place, with Esperanza Spalding’s voice and bass egging him on in four songs. His serious faith doesn’t rule out fun. [...]
